The downside is that our internet won’t be activated until the 30th. Which has been agony (and expensive with all the phone tethering). Not long now though.

I’ve been trying to get back into drawing. Using my tablet for a change.

I also bagged a copy of Bizarre Magazine for my incorporation of an octopus, since someone else was denied the prize for having won too many of the contests already. I was involved with choosing the contests for the night, surely I should have the upper hand? I must learn to rig competitions better…

The next Dr. Sketchy’s will be at Mango Tango’s. November 23rd, 7- 10pm.

Been busy with our final major project, which you can follow the progress of at baprambling.tumblr.com. Our producer Tom has been maintaining it, helping us keep track of where we are at. I will still be posting the parts which I’ve been involved in, on here, whenever possible.

The Dr. Sketchy’s Falmouth sessions have been fantastic fun as always. The number of people attending rocketed up for the October event, probably due to it being the first session since term started again. I’ll post my sketches from the Halloween Special later this evening hopefully.

Traditional Life Drawing

A few bit from our last traditional life drawing class. Wasn’t quite the norm though, since the model never actually turned up. Instead we ended up drawing each other. Naturally most people scarpered at first break…

Proposed Idea

Originally, a team of 5 were going to carry across their video game project from last term and create a trailer for it, adding me as their animator and sixth member. Over the summer they decided to drop that idea and come up with an idea for an animated short, to be about four minutes long. Again, with me animating, but also getting involved with design.

The main team consists of (with their current focus): Tom Dowler (producer), Simon Acty (director / storyboarding), Matthew Luxton (3D modeling), Emma Taylor (environments), Matthew Butler (3D modeling) and myself (animation). There are a couple of others who are expected to join us through out the project, Jacob Jones has been doing some character work with us already.

Obviously animation has not begun yet, so I’ve been concentrating on design work so far, helping ‘Matt&Matt’ with their models. I’m also support for Simon with his directing throughout this project.

The sketches above were from the first couple of days back. Emma has been in charge of environments for the last few weeks, producing some pretty kick-ass bits and pieces. I moved away from the plants almost straight after those sketches, to concentrate more on designing props. Below are some of the bits I’ve done so far, along with Matt&Matt’s 3D models.

Rocket

One of the first designs I prepared was the homing rocket. We wanted something with a bit of personality, so I had a look a nose art. As it went on, the rocket became more and more shark like. We decided to go with it and Matt Butler took it away for modelling, using a top, side and front view layout.

Harpoon Gun

For the harpoon gun, I had a little look at various whaling guns and added a few bits. Matt Luxton took my layouts to work from for his 3D model. I hadn’t drawn some parts accurately, so he used his own judgement for those bits.

Other props

Some other props which are being worked on. Matt Butler’s gramophone model below; I didn’t create any additional turn-arounds for that, he just worked straight from the sketches.

The modelling began almost as soon as we started the project, so we have made pretty good progress so far. We have a storyboard and animatic almost complete, coloured environments, character designs and Tom is working on what to show and and say during the pitch, which is in a few weeks time.

Life Drawing

Some sketches from life drawing, since our return. A new model is with us this year, which is great. Particularly because he has a moustache.

Why did you change your blog?

I changed my blog layout after the site was hacked last week. Still not sure how they got in, but hopefully it won’t happen again for a while. Will stick with this layout for the minute, nice and simple.

If you happen to be down and around the Cornwall area and want a bit more spice added to your life drawing sessions (and perhaps even a little alcohol),  you may be interested in checking out the upcoming Dr Sketchy’s Falmouth, which will be taking place at Mango Tango’s, Church Street, Falmouth between 19:00 – 22:00, on Tuesday, 29 June 2010. It will be the opening night of what is being set to be a monthly event. Tickets are going to be £5 each, sold at the door (you must be 18+). Big thanks to Leah for the heads up.

In case you haven’t heard, Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School takes away the silence of regular life drawing classes, replaces the model with burlesque performers and lets you hold a drink in your hand. They hold crazy art contests within each session, with prizes for the winners.

My original plan for Easter was to get up and do some speed painting before work each day, then after 3 days of trying and failing to get up at 6am, I shunned it. I managed to do a couple of 1-hour long digital paintings after work instead. I’ll upload them here when I have a few more – I was supposed to have 10 by now. The main bulk of my time has been t shirt printing down at Advertees and tweaking their new website ready for it’s re-launch.

Life Drawing and Sketches from before the Easter Break

I haven’t really had the energy to do any drawing over Easter, but I still have a whole load of life drawing and bits from early March to upload and show you. Enjoy.

Anatomy has been on the mind a lot recently, learning about it is almost addictive. I watched the Anatomy for Artists 4-hour streaming class over at Conceptart.org, which I really do recommend if you have the cash to spend on it. If not (or as well as), Marshall Vandruff, who teaches the class, has a list of anatomy books which he recommends.

Some bits from over the last few weeks, most of which you can see larger in my sketchbook over at CA. I tend to update my sketchbook there twice a week. You should get on there too.

By the way, Simon Acty is also on CA. Go there and make him update it.

I got a few things over Christmas which will hopefully help kick start the year. I got a lovely new scanner and mechanical pencil. Also, a personal present from me, to me: an electric eraser. My girlfriend also got me some nice frames to hang up some inspiration on my empty walls. Finally I can put up my Dan Mumford screen print and Wesley’s Ice Cream Man.

Not such a ‘Big Christmas Draw’ this year, though I did get a very important drawing done. A few years ago I was asked by a family friend’s son to draw Spiderman, while we were on holiday. I said ‘yeah sure, I’ll draw one as soon as I get home’. It kept getting put off and I was getting a bit worried about what they would expect after such a length of time.  Just before Christmas, I spent the best part of a day doing a few poses for him on an A3 sheet.
