The Sad Story. Board.

Here is the next chapter in my series of unsatisfactory accomplishments.  For my lecturers reading this, I feel very similarly about my progress on this to the progress on the Chewtv project, and I’d like to book a tutorial. There is a positive though – I have come away feeling like I can tick another box on things I enjoy.

My Rough Storyboard.

I didn’t spend long thinking about my actual story, it was more of a spontaneous ‘yeaH, THaT’D BE WicKED!!’ moment. I thought a chase might allow for some interesting shots, so I went with it. Kathy mentioned that my story sounded more like live action than animation and unfortunately my rough storyboard probably comes across that way still. It was supposed to be the technique which took the style in the right direction. Oddly the technique/style was my main drive, yet, well… it didn’t happen [read on].

Here is my roughed up storyboard, just to get compositional ideas. It is also all I could really hand in. You read from left to right, as with words, in case you weren’t sure.

Not knowing how to execute your chosen technique = failure

This seems like bit of a no-brainer, but allocating time to practice a technique is something that passed me by. I had some good inspiration for the approach I would like to of taken, problem is I didn’t try them out in good time. You can’t just pick up someone else’s technique from reference and apply it so thoroughly to your own work. I might of got away without practicing too much if it was only for 1 image. My rough storyboard had 34 frames.

I think I was expecting myself to produce highly detailed digital art for each frame when I really don’t have the skills to accomplish that yet. I need to lower the bar on what I aim for. Here is an idea of what I had hoped to get a feel of [top 2 - Troy Galluzzi, bottom - Joel Dos Reis Viegas]:

My friends over at T shirt Printing Cornwall bought me a great book around Christmas time, called Film Directing Cinematic Motion: A Workshop for Staging Scenes. I’ve had a few browses through it over the months, but I will definitely read through it before my next storyboard attempt.

………………………………………………………

The first year on this course has really thrown what I had expected myself to be interested in. I went in feeling strongest about 3D. Now I’m most interested in the early pre-production and design stages. Maybe. I can’t decide whether the accessibility of the role areas affects my favour. For example 3D is not very accessible for someone who knows nothing about the software they are using. Also,  I know with conceptual work ‘its not final’. I think this is quite important, since being a bit of a perfectionist is probably the main reason I’m falling behind.

I’m very grateful this is the first year. It has given me a chance to mess up and learn from everything the first time around.

    Steve:

Being a perfectionist is a problem but like any problem it has a solution. You can always improve your attitude towards things and people by accepting the fact that nothing in this world is fully right or fully wrong. Each person, thing or event has both a postive and negative aspect. What we need to do is focus on the positive aspect and accept the negative aspect the way it is. Definately we need to work on imroving the negative aspect but only as much as it is in our capacity. Rest we can leave as destiny.
